Five years ago, over drinks, Josh Davis and I, still flush after the success of a massive chip show at The Tank the previous October, discussed how we could capture that same momentum at other chip shows throughout the City. The half-baked suggestion of a monthly residency was lost in the conversation that followed, but, a few days later, I got an e-mail from Mike Rosenthal who was acting on Josh’s suggestion.

I was going to be the first curator of Pulsewave.

The first few months of shows where rocky, but exuded great potential. We put on amazing line-ups for crowds sometimes so few in number that it hardly seemed worth the effort. Over time, however, things began to change. After the first Blip Festival the interest surged and it soon became official: Pulsewave was now “a thing.”

The monthly showcase was considered an event that people WANTED to be a part of. Other curators were recruited, new acts were showcased, and similar events began popping up nationwide. People planned their vacations around Pulsewave, to play for a mere door split, to participate in our open mic, or just to witness the goings-on. Now, bands who once played to an empty room sell out venues across the City. Today, in 2011, Pulsewave remains an important facet of the New York and international chip communities.

In short, entering our fifth year is kind of amazing and, as such, I wanted to offer a lineup showing newcomers a little of what it was like way back in the early days of 2006. The lineup for Pulsewave’s Fifth Anniversary Show features performers who all played those early days; I’m playing, well… because I can.

I hope anyone who has ever enjoyed a Pulsewave in the past comes out and celebrates with us, as the continued success of the event is attributed not only to the performers, but the fans and supporters who show up every month and make Pulsewave the awesome party that it deserves to be.

Nullsleep is the alias of Jeremiah Johnson, an electronic musician whose style could best be described as post-cyberpunk: a combination of distorted synthpop, electro, and industrial produced with repurposed low-bit electronics. His approach embraces the politics of appropriation, leveraged limitations, destructive process and data corruption. The result is a wall of digital noise driven by a heavy beat, expanding and collapsing in a series of glitches and drones emanating from cheap plastic devices. In 1999 Nullsleep co-founded 8bitpeoples, a collective of artists interested in the audio-visual aesthetics of early home computers and video game consoles. He has since released a number of recordings through 8bitpeoples, Astralwerks, Aniplex and others. Based in New York City, Nullsleep has performed over 150 shows throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including successful world tours in 2006 and 2009.

Descended from the Serpent Kings of prehistory, Peter Swimm is the faceless power behind T.C.T.D. (True Chip Till Death), the brains behind the creation of New York City’s monthly Pulsewave concert series, and the brawn behind a unique take on the classic chip music sound that combines surf, new wave, metal, and punk. The resulting conflagration is a musical frenzy of sounds that are organic, confrontational, and always thirsting for blood. Scientists, theologians, and politicians have many differences, but in one thing they are of the same mind: Peter Swimm is the most dangerous man alive.

DJ BALLI

DJ Balli is the performing name of the Italian based breakcore artist Riccardo Balli. With a past as a drummer in the straight edge hardcore band "Isotopi del Dolore" and as a noise musician in the "S.E.B." plunderphonics collective. In 2000, after taking a break from music to write, DJ Balli returned with the release of three tracks on the "Rave In Space" compilation CD. The year 2000 was also when he started his own label Sonic Belligeranza and began DJing more regularly. Bored with the average DJs, standing and playing one record after the other, Balli got involved into the more "adventurous" turntablism, melting his crab, flare and chirp scratch with digital glitch from the laptop.

MICROPUPAZZO

Micropupazzo is 1785 invention by Karll Mikkröpüpaato from Kreikeris that claims to show "over-unity" energy - a route to purported perpetual motion. In Micropupazzo, a steel ball is pulled up a ramp by magnetism and then falls, so the magnetic energy is converted into kinetic energy. Mikkröpüpaato claims that an effect called regauging then happens, allowing the process to be repeated without the application of outside energy.
